One of the better sounding echo dots
This is my second Echo dot. I was gifted the first gen device and was happy with the functions but it lacked in sound volume and quality. It was easier to setup since I was already familiar with the eco system. The device was up and running within 5 minutes of being unboxed. Sound quality is pretty good for the price though the speaker is smaller to what I expected it to be looking at it in the images.
Much easier to install
Compared to the 3rd Generation Echo Dot with Clock, this model is much easier to install as the account settings are pre-installed into your device. Simply open the Alexa app on your phone or tablet and then follow the instructions to set-up the WiFI and you're all set to go. Install time was considerably shorter than for the 3rd Gen device.
The sound quality is slightly improved compared to the third generation. Listening to a speech radio station enhanced the speech considerably, although listening to Audible books, you'll still need to turn the volume up.
Music from Spotify sounded fine, although considering that it's still a small device, you're not going to get great reproduction from bassy music like rap or hip-hop, but for standard pop music or classical, it's tolerable for when you're in the kitchen cooking.
As for the clock, it's slightly higher up compared to the 3rd Gen, but appears to be the same sized font as the 3rd Gen, otherwise it does the job of telling the time, showing the temperature and timers.
If you listen to radio or a streaming music service a lot with your Echo Dot with Clock, then get it!
With clock is another story :-)
I got to like the old EchoDot from the start and then EchoShow too. I bought the new model because I expect better audio but also more accurate reception of commands. In fact, over time, the old echoDot seems to have gone slightly deaf. I went in search of information to better discover this phenomenon and I realized that, over time, all microphones suffer a worsening of accuracy due to wear of materials (membranes, capacitors, etc.) and this heavily affects voice recognition!
When you place these devices in noisy rooms, perhaps with radios and televisions always on, it is advisable to disable the microphones to extend their life, in fact, the continuous operation absorbs electric current and wears the materials faster, making Alexa less and less sensitive (or deaf) to receive inputs.
Returning to the product, there is no doubt that the sound is slightly improved compared to previous generations, and I am speaking to you as an Amazon Music subscriber with UltraHD option. This new model has nothing to envy to a Sony XB23 speaker that costs almost double the price!
Alexa can also work as a bluetooth speaker to listen to the playlists contained in the smartphone; simply pair it with the bluetooth to the phone and activate the play button.
